In SHJ solar cells, an 80–100 nm thick ITO layer is typically used on each surface to form thin transparent conductive layers. Based on the density of ITO with 90% of In 2 O 3 weight content, this is equivalent to about 5.7 mg W −1 consumption of ITO and 4.2 mg W −1 consumption of indium, with an assumed cell efficiency of 25.11%.

To date, maximum efficiencies of 39.2% (under standard 1-Sun illumination) and 47.1% (under concentrated 143-Suns illumination) have been achieved by a six-junction tandem device fabricated with III–V materials, 63 well above the record efficiency of 26.7% achieved by single-junction Si-based solar cells.
